The Beasts Will Surely Win
I was having a conversation with a fellow musician after a show. He asked a question about why all
the “country” guitarists seemed to love playing Hal Ketchum’s song “Past The Point of Rescue”? I
explained why I thought this might be the case. Blues became Rock and Bluegrass/Folk became
country. Rock is, a lot of times, based around minor chords while Country uses major. Therefore it’s
fun for guitarists to solo in different scales. The next day I had written “The Beasts Would Surely
Win” as an example of using a minor key. I always loved the line “The beast in me is caged by frail
and fragile bars” written by Nick Lowe and performed by Johnny Cash, so I took the concept in a
different direction.
● V/V/S/V - Just verses. Maybe I have trouble with writing choruses?

Lyrics

The Beasts Would Surely Win Matt Beatty

I have a story that I cannot tell.
If I were Religious I'm sure to go to hell.
Suit of camouflage hidden in plain sight.
Hinting at some darkness that should never see the light.
Seek comfort in harbours thought safe from the storms
Covered as a snake in blankets that are warm
Lonely keeping secrets, hard to keep them in
If they slip from shadows The Beasts Would Surely Win.

I've never loved another, my heart has stayed pure,
But I seek out others pleasures like an addict seeks a cure.
Each time I find an evil, swear it will be the last.
Trying to drive to heaven on a tank so low of gas
Sometimes I wake at night fearful of my deeds
Thoughts of a condemned man on the shortest of reprieves
I think I may confide to lift the weights from within.
Afraid of consequences as The Beasts Would Surely Win.

(SOLO)

I've tried to make amends, lead a better life.
Tried to be righteous for my kids and for my wife.
Past always follows an elephant in my head.
Crushing happy moments with feelings of dread.
Seven deadly sins of which I've shared a few
Depths of pain to much for most they terrify me too
I struggle with my demons to keep them from the sun
But I am their accomplice, The Beasts Have Already Won.
