Never Enough Time
I was participating in my first co-writing session thanks to the Calgary Songsmiths. The writer I was
paired with resided in Texas so we met online. We spent our first meeting talking and getting to know
each other a little. Our styles were different. Hers being more earthy folky while mine seemed more
electric, at least online. She had some ideas about what she wanted to concoct together and
mentioned: Something with a bass line. Something slow tempo for me, which would be mid-tempo
for her. Something about time and the environment. When we ended our session I wrote “Never
Enough Time” in about 15 minutes and sent it to her. It wasn’t anywhere close to what she was
thinking so we continued the process and managed to write a different tune. That all being said, I
loved what I had written. I think it really showed my headspace on the different stages of the passage
of time. I’m particularly fond of the mother’s line “it’s sweeter the less that we stay”. I think her
wisdom wasn’t just directed to her child at that moment but in the child’s questions about the meaning
of life and death.
● V/C/V/C/B/S/C/V. I think it’s fun to end off a song in a verse. Especially when you end off on
the Title. Also of note…the speed of the song, and the percussion, are accidently exactly like
a ticking clock.

Lyrics

Never Enough Time Matt Beatty

“I don’t want to go home” I screamed at my Mom
“Every time you bring me here we never stay that long
You never give me enough time”

You told me its sweeter the less that we stay
I argued with you that there must be away
That you could give me more time

Never enough time to tend all the gardens we planted
Its not set in stone, so don’t you take it for granted.

Those years at school went by so fast
I know you have to leave but we want this to last
Will there be enough time?

Burned up the phones finding things to say
But you’re off in Atlanta I’m still in Santa Fe
Never seems enough time.

Never enough time to tend all the gardens we planted
Its not set in stone, so don’t you take it for granted.

Making time for my friends, making time for my mother
Making time for the kids, making time for my lover
But its all a lie, Can’t make more as hard as you try

Never enough time to tend all the gardens we planted
Its not set in stone, so don’t you take it for granted.

My kids came home to help clean up this place
Now that you’re gone its just an empty space
they’ll visit more, if they can find the time

I’m looking out the window of an empty home
My life packed in boxes, I still all alone
and I know...there’s never enough time.
